The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which is the international authority over top-level domains (TLDs) announced the expansion of generic TLDs. The domain names you’re used to seeing are .com, .org and .net, but this new development will allow companies to create branded domains such as .mcdonalds or generic TLDs such as .sports.

The article also details the hefty price on these TLDs ($185,000 for just the application fee) and predicts trademark lawsuits.
