Unlike many of my counterparts, it seems, I did not go to Austin to get my picture taken with Grumpy Cat. In fact, it makes me a little sad that the rest of the world heard about how much of a fuss was made about Grumpy Cat at South by Southwest (SXSW) this year. According to one of the sessions I attended, Grumpy Cat and Elon Musk were the two most talked about topics on social media as it related to the interactive conference. It angers and terrifies me that we are all mystified by this stupid cat. There were more than 600 people lined up outside the Mashable house at one time to get a picture with this thing. Seriously, people?
I have nothing against the cat, but I have everything against the fact that a conference that is supposed to highlight our brilliance and trends in the digital space was taken over by a meme. That says a lot.
On the other hand, I went to Austin to have my mind blown and to learn about things that I didn’t even realize were happening yet. I went to Austin to hone my skills and get better at my craft. I went to Austin to listen to industry experts argue over the value of social media and give me a new perspective on digital marketing. I went to Austin to bring back valuable insights and stories that my clients can use to better their marketing efforts. I came back from Austin with all of that, and more.
